About the artwork

Salome is the daughter of Herod Philip and Herodias. Her name is known from the work of the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. In the New Testament Salome is not mentioned by name, but later she appears as the daughter of Herodias. At the insistence of her mother, Salome brought about the death of John the Baptist by asking for the head of John the Baptist as a reward for her dancing.

The model that appears half naked in the portrait is Lili Marberg (9 December 1876 Grimma, Germany - 8 April 1962 Vienna, Austria) was a German and Austrian actress.

Here the girl sits in an oriental dress where her breasts, torso and belly are partially exposed. She looks happily surprised at Johannes's head.

Leopold Schmutzler (Mies, then Austria, 29 March 1864 - Munich, Bavaria, Germany, 20 June 1940) was a painter born in Bohemia and working mainly in Germany, best known as a portraitist. In his elegant portraits of women, he always paid much attention to the clothing, which was usually very sumptuous and therefore extremely decorative.
