The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a predator in the feline family. The scientific name of the species was published in 1758 as Felis onca by Carl Linnaeus.[2] The jaguar is found in Central America and much of South America. It superficially closely resembles the leopard, but is more heavily built and has a more substantial rosette pattern.
