The Maasvlakte, also called First Maasvlakte to distinguish it from the later constructed Second Maasvlakte, is a large industrial area built in the Maas estuary. Located directly on the North Sea, the plain is part of the Port of Rotterdam and belongs to the municipality of Rotterdam. However, the city of Rotterdam lies 40 kilometres inland.
The Maasvlakte was built in the 1960s. The first ships moored in 1973. The Maasvlakte was built by laying a ring dyke within which sand from the North Sea was deposited. This now forms the bottom of the plain. The sand still contains many fossils. The area is therefore popular with fossil hunters.
