Zermatt in the southern Swiss canton of Valais is a mountain resort popular with skiers, climbers and hikers. The town lies at an altitude of 1,600 m at the foot of the famous pyramid-shaped Matterhorn. Zermatt's main street, Bahnhofstrasse, is home to boutiques, hotels and restaurants as well as a lively après-ski scene.
Zermatt's location at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the middle of a large hiking and skiing region makes it one of the most attractive holiday villages anywhere. The ski area comprises 54 cableways and lifts and 360 kilometres of pistes. The "Matterhorn glacier paradise" area is the largest and highest summer skiing area in Europe. Numerous national ski teams train here in summer. The Matterhorn glacier ride takes you from Trockener Steg to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn) at 3,883 metres above sea level. The Gornergradbahn (a cogwheel railway) goes from Zermatt to the 3089-metre Gornergrat. From here you can enjoy an overwhelming view of the Matterhorn, the glaciers and the Monte Rosa massif.
