Young Italian Woman, with ‘Puck’ the Dog - Thérèse Schwartze

by Accessible Art

Young Italian Woman, with ‘Puck’ the Dog" is an elegant and intimate portrait by the celebrated Dutch artist Thérèse Schwartze. A leading portraitist of her time, Schwartze was renowned for her ability to capture not just the likeness but also the personality and inner life of her subjects.
The painting depicts a young woman in three-quarter profile, her gaze directed downward towards a graceful dog who looks up at her adoringly. Her costume, with its voluminous white sleeves, black corset-like bodice, and red undersleeves, suggests a romanticized Italianate style. She stands against a rich, turquoise-draped background, which provides a vibrant contrast to her attire and the pale coat of the dog.
Schwartze's masterful brushwork is evident in the varied textures, from the soft folds of the woman's blouse and the deep velvet of her skirt to the smooth, sleek coat of the dog. The focus of the painting is the tender, silent interaction between the woman and her canine companion. It’s a quiet moment of affection and connection, rendered with a sophisticated blend of academic precision and a modern, impressionistic sensibility. The work is a beautiful example of Schwartze's talent for creating portraits that are both formally elegant and emotionally resonant.
