About the artwork

Inscription: Painted for Juemi as a memento in the early spring of the Jiwei year (1919), Beihong.
Seal: "Xu Beihong of Jiangnan" (square seal), "Grasping subtlety" (square seal with incised letters) and "Live in the wide house of the world" (square seal)

This work was made for Ji Juemi before Xu Beihong went abroad to study in France in spring 1919. The modelling and structure of the horses are very accurate and show the young Xu Beihong's exceptional talent for realism. Kang Youwei called it "an enchanting sketch" in honour of his ability.

Xu Beihong (19 July 1895 - 26 September 1953) was a Chinese painter from Yixing, Jiangsu province. He is particularly known for his ink paintings of horses and birds. In 1915, he moved to Shanghai. Here he lived off selling his works. In 1917, he travelled to Tokyo in Japan to study painting here. Back in China, he was given a chair at Peking University. From 1919, Xu studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers. Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
