About "Wreck on Sólheimasandur: forgotten history"

by Thijs Schouten

About the artwork

While travelling through Iceland, I decided to visit the iconic wreck on the black beach of Sólheimasandur. This US Navy plane, which crashed in 1973, still lies there after all these years, as a silent witness of times gone by. It took me over an hour and a half to reach the wreckage, but it was worth it. The combination of the weathered metal and the black sand creates a surreal image that is both impressive and melancholic. As I stood there, I felt the power of nature and the impermanence of human creations.

I would like to have this photo hanging on my wall because it reminds me of the journey and the effort it took to get there. Every time I look at this picture, I feel the cold wind of Iceland and the loneliness of that deserted beach. It is not just an impressive image; it is a reminder of the adventures to be found off the beaten track. This photo brings a piece of that mysterious and untamed world into my home and inspires me daily to keep looking for the unknown.
