Workshop with a Raw Edge amid the splendour of the Somerset chic & jet set.
Somerset is quite a posh area an hour's drive from London. For that reason, many people, with enough money live in this rural area. On a walk from Bruton via the footpath (public footpath) towards the Hauser & Wirth art gallery, which is also very posh, we walked past this workshop or garage. It looks like part of a farm, or perhaps the allotment (Bruton Allotments) a bit further on, and it is as if time has stood still there for 50 years. The contrast with the neighbours where everything is bright and sleek could not be greater.
Like a last bastion holding its own against gentrification.
The raw materials, the deep colours, the metal of the door that is weathered, the pile of stone are made even more powerful by the light.
Here we keep doing what we always did. A nostalgic image. The England of then, but also of now. The countryside like the soul of the people who come from it.
