The guiding lines of the Maasboulevard take you along the cycle path into the city of Rotterdam. Like a star, the structures converge. This is a somewhat rawer part of Rotterdam that you are less likely to visit as a tourist. However, cyclists know it well, especially when you cycle over the Willemsbrug from Zuid to Blaak. The tranquillity of the shadow under the bridge, the stately pillar, contrasts with the dynamic modern architecture of the Willemswerf. Jackie Chan's slide. The building's sloping roof lent itself perfectly to the stunts in the film Who Am I, which premiered in 1998. A real film set, in other words.
What appeals to my about the picture itself is the graffiti that stands out, from the shadows under the bridge. In the black and white, this is expressed extra strongly. Creativity and individuality in the shadow side of society. Visible and meaningful to the city, but always in duality and never conforming.
This cityscape, this city scape is one of my favourites in Rotterdam. The modern Netherlands, Holland, the big city, the street, where there is only movement, and progress. The industriousness. The modern architecture, the mundane, the peace in all the bustle. Where everyone sees each other without meeting. Cyclists, walkers, motorists, the traffic like a family that has outgrown each other but still remains related.
