The lily of the valley is a flowering plant which is attributed feminine qualities. Two of the flower's alternative names - the tears of Our Lady and the tears of Mary - are derived from Christian legends that originated from the weeping of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of Jesus. Other etiologies originate from the tears of Eve after she and Adam were expelled from the Garden of Eden. It is a symbol of humility in religious painting.
Here it is used in a nude portrait of a model. The nude model stands in front of a canvas and is portrayed en-profil.
The maid puts a hand on her hip and the model's buttocks, shoulders and a breast are visible.
Wladyslaw Podkowinski, pseudonym for Andrzej Ansgary (Warsaw, 4 February, 1866 - 5 January 1895), was a Polish painter. He is considered a forerunner of Polish Impressionism.
