In the year 1574 a naval battle took place near Bergen op Zoom, says the Foundation for Art in the Public Domain. The battle was fought between the towns of Zeeland and Holland who took on the Spaniards. This Battle of Reimerswaal during the Eighty Years' War was lost by the Spaniards.
Almost all the pillars stand in the water, two of them just on the quay. According to the artist, this was a deliberate choice. Although the weather vanes stand on land, that used to be the place where the water was. The work of art not only looks back to 1574, but also to the time when the Bergse Plaat was still a long way off.
