Willem van Haecht, Apelles paints Campaspe, c. 1630 This room is full of paintings, all of which are existing Flemish, German and Italian works of art. The sculptures, too, are well-known classics. This room of art was painted by Willem van Haecht. It is a subject that was especially popular in Antwerp. In the front left, Van Haecht painted a story from classical antiquity. It shows Apelles painting the portrait of Campaspe, the lover of Alexander the Great. The latter finds the result so beautiful that he is satisfied with the portrait and gives the mistress to Apelles. Alexander preferred art to nature.
