About "Wild donkey on Bonaire"

About the artwork

People who exhibit less intelligent behaviour are often associated with donkeys. 'He's as dumb as a donkey' is the saying that is used ad nauseam. Rarely, however, is the truth violated as much as in this assumption. Granted, donkeys are stubborn animals. But make no mistake, they are also extremely smart and cautious. 500 years ago, the Spanish set foot on Bonaire and looked straight into the eyes of the Indians, the original inhabitants of the Caribbean island. But the explorers did not come alone; in their company was also room for their most loyal allies, the never protesting donkeys. In the car-free era, these ungulates were mainly used to transport goods and people around the island. The five centuries that have passed since the introduction of donkeys to Bonaire have been extremely turbulent for the animals and can best be compared to a rollercoaster ride. Sometimes the carts almost spun out of control, threatening the complete extinction of this species, and at other times there were periods when the carts quietly went round and round and in those periods the donkeys peacefully hobbled along in Bonairean society. This photo was taken at Morotin in the north-east of Bonaire.
