Wild Swans or White Swans are the largest waterfowl
Anatomy and lifestyle
Swans are large birds with a long neck. They are heavy and take off with difficulty. When taking off, they flap their legs and flap their wings vigorously. They walk with a waddling gait.
Food consists mostly of aquatic plants, which are sought in shallow water. This is where their long neck comes in handy. In the absence of plants, swans also eat small fish such as roaches.
White swans are by far the most common in the northern hemisphere. The black swan is an extremely scarce breeding bird here. The latter are descended from animals in waterfowl collections. They are resident birds, but in the Netherlands or Belgium the young do not survive a hard winter.
In swans, there is no difference in plumage between the male and female.
