About "White-faced lemur (Pithecia pithecia) - A Mysterious Forest Creature in Pictures"

by Robert Jan Smit

About the artwork

The white-faced lemur is an unusual species of monkey that lives in the tropical rainforests of northern South America, including Venezuela, Guyana and parts of the Amazon. This monkey belongs to the sac-like family and is known for its dense, fluffy fur and the striking difference between males and females. Whereas the male has a contrasting light face against dark fur, the female - as seen in this photo - has a greyer, more finely drawn face and a more subtle facial expression.
In this photo, we see a female White-faced lemur. Her greying hair and calm, almost thoughtful gaze betray experience and wisdom. The shot is special because of its intimacy: the way the animal holds her hand and looks directly at the photographer gives the photo something almost human and personal.

The soft green background lets the animal stand out beautifully and highlights her natural surroundings without being distracting. Images like this bring us closer to the lives of species we rarely see up close. They remind us of the rich biodiversity of the rainforest - and of our responsibility to protect these wonders of nature.
