The monument, inaugurated in 1857, stands in front of the German National Theatre on Theatre Square in Weimar. It was created by the Dresden sculptor Ernst Rietschel.
The material for the bronze monument, which depicts the two poet princes Goethe and Schiller, came from melted-down Turkish cannons provided by the Bavarian King Maximilian II. The monument was inaugurated in 1857 to mark the 100th birthday of Grand Duke Carl-August of Weimar-Saxony-Eisenach (1757-1828).
