About "Waal bridge Nijmegen in black and white"

by Nicky Kapel

About the artwork

The Waal Bridge is an arch bridge over the river Waal that connects the center of Nijmegen with Lent. The bridge is part of the N325 and the city route S100. Two kilometers to the west is the city bridge De Oversteek, opened in 2013.
The full length of the Waal Bridge is 604 meters, and the height, at the center of the main arch, about 60 meters above sea level. The arch spans a distance of 244.1 meters between the two piers, making it the longest arch bridge in Europe when it was completed in 1936. Up to about the road surface, the arch geometrically coincides with a circular segment with a radius of 200 meters.

Unlike many other bridges from the same period and of similar construction, such as the IJssel Bridge near Zwolle, the John S. Thompson Bridge near Grave and the John Frost Bridge near Arnhem, the Waal Bridge is unique in that it is an arch bridge in the literal sense of the word; the transfer of forces actually rests in the two piers.

On the western side of the Waal Bridge is a bus lane. The bridge has a bicycle lane on both sides with a narrow pedestrian lane. The bridge was first green, from 1980 it was painted light beige.
