Historian and alderman Jacob Vinhuizen commissioned the construction of Nieuw Mentheda in an eclectic style in 1896. The villa was designed by Middelstum-based architect Pieter Tilbusscher. Both the villa and the landscape garden, a so-called 'slingertoene', and the entrance gate are designated national monuments.
A conversion took place in 1934, led by architect Sietze Albert Veenstra. This renovation hardly changed the villa's appearance. Veenstra, who worked in a sober variant of the Amsterdam School and also hailed from Middelstum, designed the conservatory on the south facade with a brick parapet bearing the name 'Mentheda' in metal letters. He also designed a brick pavement and a walled terrace with brick flower boxes on either side.
