A shot at sunrise. The valley is completely submerged in fog. Only the rocky peaks and the striking Lilienstein in the background emerge from the fog.
I am here on the Gamrig.
The Gamrig is a 253 metre high mountain in the Vordere Sächsische Schweiz to the east of Rathen. Due to its free-standing position above the village, it offers far-reaching views over the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and, above all, the Elbe valley.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are located in the border region between Saxony and the Czech Republic, around 50 kilometres south of Dresden. The German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is also known as Saxon Switzerland - the Czech part is known as Bohemian Switzerland.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are also known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" due to the uniqueness of their rock formations.
