The word Meganisi is derived from the Greek words Mega (= large) and Nisi (= island). However, it is only a small island of 20 km2 and it is located southeast of the island of Lefkada. It is the largest of the islands that lies between Lefkada and the Greek mainland.
There are three villages on Meganisi:
1) Katomeri, a traditional village in the east.
2) Vathy, the port of Meganisi,
a fishing village in a deep bay, very popular among sailors and
3) Spartochori, a traditional hilltop village with narrow alleys and traditional houses.
In total there are just over 1000 permanent residents on the island.
Meganisi is a very green, mountainous island. The highest peak is 301 meters. The north of the island has less steep mountains, so here are all the beaches.
You can take the ferry from the coastal town of Nidri to the island. This ferry can be seen on the photo.
