Behind the coast of India's Varkala province lies an area of lakes and canals. It lies low. For a Dutchman cruising there, it is like being in the Netherlands but with rice fields behind the dykes instead of pastures with cows and palm trees. Along the dykes are small villages where residents still do their laundry in the canal. Everyone has their own little stairway. Motor houseboats pass through the area. HEt is one of the most relaxing ways to have a few days' holiday. From the boat, you can see the fields, vegetation, villages and residents passing by.
