USS Independence (LCS-2).
The USS Independence (LCS-2) was part of the new Independence Class, a class for new trimaran ships.
This is the sixth ship in the United States Navy fleet to be named "Independence". The suffix LCS-2 stands for Littoral Combat Ship, the number refers to the serial number for the class. The LCS-1 is a monohull from competitor Lockheed Martin: the USS Freedom (LCS-1). The Independence class has one sister ship, the USS Coronado (LCS-4).
During its lifetime, USS Independence was plagued by technical problems and changing warship requirements. Built for speed, the ship sacrificed firepower and affordability and was one of the most expensive ships in the US Navy. On 29 July 2021, the Independence was decommissioned.
