Two chinstrap penguins together in the snow in Antarctica by Nanda Bussers

I followed these two chinstrap penguins for quite some time as they trudged across the snow-covered hills, until they finally plunged together into the icy water. This shot was taken just before that dive, during a light snowfall. They pause for a moment behind a wall of snow, as if surveying their surroundings. The photo has been kept very clean and light, with plenty of white space above the penguins. A pure and minimalist moment in nature that perfectly captures the tranquillity of the polar region.

Penguins of the Southern Ocean

During my journey to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica, I met the inhabitants of the south: penguins living in a world of ice, storms and endless open space.

What struck me most in their presence was their calm and naturalness amidst this extreme environment. Sometimes curious, sometimes touchingly vulnerable and sometimes almost comical in their movements, but always fully present in the moment.

With my camera, I sought not only portraits of animals, but small moments of connection and stillness. A penguin alone in the snow. Two animals huddled close together in the wind. Patterns of movement, light and stillness in the white landscape.

In this album, I have compiled a selection of encounters with, amongst others, king penguins, gentoo penguins and other inhabitants of the Southern Ocean. Images that, for me, are not just about wildlife, but also about resilience, gentleness and the extraordinary beauty of life at the edge of the world.
