It's as much a part of Bangkok as the cookshops, the temples and the massage parlors. We are talking about the tuk-tuk, the three-wheeled cab that has become a landmark of Thailand. This mixture of car and motorcycle is also called autorickshaw.
Until the 1990s, the tuk-tuk was an important means of transport for getting from A to B in Bangkok. But in the meantime, the vehicles, which can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, are increasingly being pushed out of the streetscape. Around 9,000 are still on the road. There are now more than ten times as many cabs.
The remaining tuk-tuk drivers concentrate primarily on tourists.
