Probably few of us will remember it, but the zoo was once located in the middle of Münster's city centre. The Tuckesburg is one of the two surviving buildings that still remind us of the old zoo.
The zoo's founder, Professor Hermann Landois, lived there with his beer-drinking monkey Lehmann until his death. At first he was given a sip now and then to ward off the cold, but in the end he could no longer do without beer and schnapps and died of a drunkard's liver. By the way, he still exists stuffed in the zoo's collection, in proper style with a beer bottle in his hand. The monkey, not the professor! By the way, he is buried in the central cemetery.
