Sometimes you see something that amazes you, like here.
The photo was taken in the Walibi Sands. Part of the Sharqiya Sands desert in Oman. The sand coloured beautifully in the setting sun and in the far distance there was little more than us and, a little further on, a tent camp with residents and camels.
And as we walk across the sand, I suddenly see this tree. A not too big, but certainly not too small, tree on a sandy slope of a dune in the desert. And immediately a thousand questions shoot through my mind. Who put that tree there? Or did seed itself find this spot? Why is it standing here so alone? And how does it survive the desert climate? Does anyone perhaps water it, and if so, why?
He is not really beautiful. Yet it touches me. Alone, growing and contrasting beautifully with the orange-coloured sand. And the more I look at it, the more it becomes a symbol for me. For loneliness, for toughness, for bravely persevering in harsh conditions, for peace and space, for pride and much more.
And it only becomes more so when I am back in the Netherlands and look at the picture. With some images, it is so easy to see symbolism. They seem made for a different meaning than simply the image that is in the picture. And that is the case for me right now.
