The fleece of gold is mined during shearing. Each shearer keeps a sheep under control and skillfully shaves it in the barn.
This work of art was originally known as Shearing at Newstead and is a painting from 1894 by the Australian artist Tom Roberts. The painting depicts sheep shearers practising their profession in a timber barn in Newstead North, a sheep station near Inverell on the northern plateaus of New South Wales. The same barn is depicted in another work by Roberts, Shearing Shed, Newstead (1894).
The painting was originally called Shearing at Newstead but was renamed The Golden Fleece after the Golden Fleece of Greek mythology to honour the wool industry and the nobility of shearers. This fitted in with Roberts's conscious idealisation of the Australian pastoral worker and landscape.
Thomas William Roberts (Dorchester, England, 9 March 1856 - Kallista, near Melbourne, Australia, 14 September 1931) was an Australian painter. He is associated with both Realism and Impressionism. Roberts painted many landscapes and genre works in which he often depicted ordinary Australian workers.
