Thingvallavatn, the lake at Thingvellir. The valingvallavatn lake with its surface area of 84 km² is the largest natural lake in Iceland. The deepest point is 114 meters. Vellankatla is located on the northeast coast, where it is wonderful to see that water flows from below the lava field into the lake and is also fed from a powerful source of water located below the surface. Most of the water in the lake comes from such water sources. Only a small part is supplied by the Öxará. The Öxarárfoss waterfall is also located in this river. Less important rivers are the Ölfusvatnsá and the Villingavatnsá. Warm springs also feed the lake, such as that of Varmagjá at Þorsteinsvík near Nesjavellir in the southwest. The water is drained to the sea by the Sogið (the Piston or the Slurper), the longest source river in Iceland.
