The thick-billed oriole is a small but striking songbird that is common in the forests, gardens and plantations of Costa Rica. With its compact size, thick bill and contrasting colours, it is a favourite subject for birdwatchers and photographers. The male is easily recognised by its shiny blue-black back and bright yellow breast and belly, while the female is a more subdued olive-green colour.
This bird feeds mainly on berries and fruits, playing an important role in seed dispersal. Its melodious song and lively presence make it a familiar sight in tropical nature. You often see the thick-billed organist in pairs or small groups, moving quickly between branches and leaves.
This photo collection captures the thick-billed organist's charm: from colourful portraits in morning light to images in which he forages in fruit-bearing trees. Its combination of elegance, song and ecological significance makes it one of Costa Rica's little gems of biodiversity.
