The works of mercy, Pieter Brueghel the Younger
Pieter Brueghel the Younger (Brussels, 1564 or 1565 - Antwerp, 1638) was a southern Dutch painter, eldest son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. When he was five years old, his father died and nine years later his mother. Pieter and his brother Jan were taken in by Mayken Verhulst, their maternal grandmother, ('t Vliegend Peert at Mechelen) and raised there.
Pieter Brueghel the Younger became master in 1585. He then began painting landscapes, religious subjects and fantasy subjects. For the latter paintings, he often used fire and grotesque creatures, earning him the nickname "The Hellish Brueghel." He was less talented than his father and his brother Jan; therefore, he had to rely mainly on copying his father's works. He collaborated with Pieter Neeffs (I), adding human figures to his architectural interiors of churches
