The wood anemone usually grows in large groups. The plants have three height leaves on the flower stems with white flowers and grow 10-25 cm high.
The wood anemone has a rhizome, which runs close to the soil surface and has white buds. The leaves are on the rhizome.
The wood anemone occurs in large parts of western and central Europe.
In the Netherlands, wood anemone is quite common in the dunes, in southern Limburg and on the higher sandy soils and rare in the clay areas. In the low lands of the Netherlands a large part of the locations are manorial environments where the species was once planted. This also applies to all sites in Flevoland. Spontaneous establishment has not occurred so far. Clones can expand laterally by 1 m per year, but seed production and dissemination are rare. The wood anemone on its natural growth sites is an indicator of old forest; here it can grow together with other indicators such as sheath yellow star (Gagea spathacea), rough field rush (Luzula pilosa) and common vetch (Sanicula europaea). Where wood anemone grows in hedgerows, these are old hedgerows. Where the plant grows outside the forest, it is often on locations where there used to be forest or wooded banks.
For Belgium, the species is reported for above 300 m in grasslands.
