Sotterum is a hamlet in the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, in the Dutch province of Friesland.
The hamlet Sotterum originated on a mound. In the 12th century, a monk in Fulda quoted the town of Sotrenheim in a copy of a document from 944. Probably it concerns the hamlet, but it could also have been a place of almost the same name in the neighbourhood.
In 1543 the place was in any case reported as Sottum and from the 17th century Sotterum. The place name would refer to the fact that it was a residence (heem/um) of the person Sôhtra, a reconstructed personal name.
There's a ramp near the hamlet. The entrenchment was erected in the winter of 1580-1581 by order of the flu man Jancke van Osinga as a defence against the Spaniards during the occupation of Makkum. The entrenchment was still indicated on maps in the 19th century.
