With this ship, Prince William III left for England in 1688 to drive out the Catholic king James II and secure the Protestant religion. 'For faith and freedom' is written in Latin on the red flag. Bakhuysen made the painting in 1689, the year William III and Mary Stuart were crowned king and queen of England.
