About the artwork

An exact picture of the original painting Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh from 1889.

I spent a lot of time creating this image in beautiful realistic fresh colours as I think Vincent van Gogh intended it to be.

Probably the most famous painting by Vincent van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh made the starry night in June 1889, when he was voluntarily admitted to the hospital of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for psychiatric treatment. He also made a number of pen drawings on the same subject. In mid-September he sent the paintings to his brother in Paris.

The painting is a night scene with yellow stars above a small town with hills. It is a view from an imaginary point over a village with a church tower and on the left a flaming cypress and on the right olive trees against the hills. For the use of complementary colors, Van Gogh turned to Delacroix.

The painting is often associated with the words of Vincent van Gogh: "Why, I wonder, wouldn't the shining dots in the sky be as easy to reach as the black dots on the map of France? Just as we take the train to Tarascon or Rouen, we use death to travel to the stars." He wrote this in a letter to his brother Theo sent from Arles on 9 or 10 July 1888.
