The rugged guardians of São Lourenço by Walter G. Allgöwer

At the edge of the world, time seems to breathe more slowly here. The rock formations of Ponta de São Lourenço rise out of the Atlantic like ancient guardians, moulded by fire, wind and salty water. Volcanic rock, rough and streaked with rust-coloured veins, tells of a past in which the earth itself was still in a state of upheaval. Each stone looks like a fragment of a forgotten poem, written in lava and surf.
The sea beats tirelessly against the cliffs, foaming white, as if it wants to reclaim the secrets of the island. Between the sky and the water lies a tense silence, broken only by the call of the wind that sweeps across the peninsula, carrying the scent of salt and freedom. The cliffs drop away abruptly, uncompromisingly, and open up a view of an expanse that teaches humility.
Here, at the easternmost tip of Madeira, opposites meet: Hardness and tenderness, movement and permanence. A single green plant clings to the stone and whispers of life despite all adversity. The landscape appears archaic and timeless at the same time - a place where Europe ends and the infinite begins. Those who linger here not only hear the sea, but also the quiet echo of their own thoughts.
