The regents of the Spinhuis and Nieuwe Werkhuis in Amsterdam, Karel du Jardin
A meeting seems to be interrupted for a moment by a messenger who brings a letter. These are the five administrators of the Spinhuis, the Amsterdam women's prison. The women who were imprisoned here for theft or begging spent the day mainly with spiders. Well-to-do citizens like these gentlemen ran these kinds of institutions. In this way they ensured peace and quiet in the city.
