The only squirrel species that lives in the Netherlands is the Sciurus vulgaris. It is popularly known as the red or common squirrel. Its fur is reddish-brown. They have a large bushy tail that is almost as long as their body. They use their tail to steer and stay balanced. They can also be recognised by the cute little tufts on their ears. The red squirrel mainly settles in forests or dunes. If there are enough hiding places, they can also show themselves in parks or gardens.
This photo was taken in the forest in Hoogeloon. A location where many squirrels are based. For instance, there were 4 of them present at the same time this day while taking this photo! They were enjoying the food-rich environment and the water source where I was sitting. Although the red squirrel is not necessarily rare, they are still very nice to see and observe.
A lover of nature will love this photo. The light which from behind puts the squirrel in a real spotlight and the so familiar cute pose the squirrel is sitting in complete the picture!
