About ‘The port of Ostend’ by Geert Van Baelen

This work is based on a photographic moment in the marina of Ostend, where boats are moored close together and a forest of masts pierces the sky. The colourful flags, the rhythm of the lines and the reflections in the water combine to form a lively maritime scene.

In the painterly translation, the emphasis shifts from detail to atmosphere. With powerful brushstrokes, layered textures and contrasting colours, the dynamics of the harbour are made tangible. The boats remain recognisable, but at the same time they dissolve partly into paint and movement, giving the image a more expressive and contemporary look.

The result is not a literal representation of the place, but an interpretation of the moment: an interplay of structure, colour and energy that evokes the liveliness of Ostend and its harbour.
