The old town hall in Amsterdam, Pieter Jansz. Saenredam, 1657
Saenredam based his painting on a drawing he made sixteen years earlier. On the threshold to the front hall he mentioned that this dilapidated town hall had meanwhile burned down and a monumental new town hall had been built (the current Palace on Dam Square). From 1658 onwards, this painting hung in memory of the old building in the distinguished mayor's office of the new town hall.
