The magnanimity of Scipio, Karel van Mander (I), 1600 Oil on copper, h 44cm × w 79cm.
A famous example of generosity and self-control from antiquity is depicted here. After the conquest of Carthage, the Roman general Scipio returns a beautiful young woman, who belonged to him as spoils of war, to her betrothed. He refuses even the gifts offered to him by her parents. Van Mander had a fondness for variegated colours, which here stand out clearly against the landscape.
