By decree of King William III, two towers were placed on the island in 1853, which were equipped with a stationary light a year later. These towers are 'beacons' for the shipping traffic. When the lights of the two towers coincided, the sailors knew that they could sail between the banks from the North Sea to the Wadden Sea.
