The gardens are deserted' I made in 2019 and is constructed with a few layers and with different materials. It is a collage of mixed media: pieces of magazine, newspaper, acrylic paint, markers and plastic rubbish.
The first layer is a still from a video with a song about a bombed-out city in Syria, with empty streets, destroyed buildings and abandoned gardens.
Over this layer, I painted a dreamy landscape of a forest with beautiful flowers.
I covered the sad images with a beautiful, calm and peaceful landscape.
I literally used the text of the caption in the still of the video, 'The gardens are deserted' but the fairytale forest full of flowers is the opposite. June 2021
My series 'DREAMSCAPES' consists of dreams, thoughts and the visual information bombarded at us every day.
The landscapes grow through layers of images; shapes and structures of the imagery I encounter through different media. I use photographs's from film and television, images and texts from magazines and newspapers, as well as plastic waste and organic material.
As a young girl I grew up next to a farm in the east of the Netherlands. I was always outside with the animals and drawing. I always said: 'When I'm older I want to be an artist and a farmer'
