The forest of forgotten fables by Annette Schmucker

This fascinating, abstract landscape painting transports the viewer into a mystical, dreamlike world, which is given a deeply poetic meaning by the title "The Wood of Forgotten Fables".

The scene is dominated by a dark, deep colour palette that creates the feeling of a forest at dusk or an enchanted place. Rich blues, indigo and violet tones blend together to form the blurred, shadowy outlines of trees on either side of the composition. The painting technique is fluid and expressive, with translucent layers that lend the entire image an ethereal, mysterious depth.

In the centre of the painting there appears to be a clearing or body of water with veils of blue, turquoise and muted green running across its surface. This surface reflects the actual visual centrepiece of the picture: a dramatic cloud formation or glow of light at the top of the picture. This celestial phenomenon glows in warm, glowing tones of peach, orange and gold - a luminous mystery that breaks through the darkness and seems to illuminate the hidden fables and stories of this place.

Accents of bright turquoise and deep purple appear throughout the forest, lending the composition a mysterious, almost magical energy. The texture of the work, worked on a rough canvas, reinforces the impression of the hidden and the vague, as if one were looking through a thick fog to recognise the contours of an ancient story.

It is an emotionally dense and evocative painting that invites the viewer to decipher for themselves the forgotten tales and magic that lie hidden in the depths of nature.
