The Great Firefly is an extremely rare resident butterfly. It lives in low moorland bogs near ile peat moss reed beds and transitions to other biotopes and is found exclusively in the low moorland areas of the northern Netherlands. A subspecies whose occurrence is restricted to the Netherlands lives here. It flies in one generation between early July and mid-August. The caterpillar is green with small light spots.
