Battle of Grolle.
Once every two years, the town of Groenlo is renamed Grolle.
A battle took place here in July 1627 during the 80-year war between the State army and the Spanish.
The State army was led by Prince Frederik Hendrik and consisted of 20,000 foot soldiers and 5,000 horsemen.
The battle is re-enacted in Groenlo every two years by 1,500 re-enactors from many different countries.
I was there in October 2024, a bright weekend, to capture the battle with my camera.
Not only on the battlefield, where the battle is re-enacted by the amazing re-enactors who have developed this life into a kind of lifestyle.
Also in the town itself, where the inhabitants of Grolle have spared no expense to dress up in 17th-century clothes.
From young to old, they look like they have been transported straight from that era to the present.
Even in the many army camps outside the ramparts, people live like in those days.
There is cooking and frying on fire pits and the smell of food meets you from all sides.
The 10th edition of The Battle of Grolle will be played, exactly 400 years later, in 2027.
I will definitely be there again then.
My great passion is portrait photography, especially children and the elderly,
but especially in Fine Art photography, I can lose myself completely.
Beautiful photos that tell a story...
