Beauty often lies in perfection, but sometimes it lies in the exact opposite. The African marabou stork is perhaps the best example of this. With its bare head, long neck, imposing beak and somewhat scruffy plumage, it is not immediately seen as the most elegant bird in Africa. Yet this remarkable stork has a presence that is hard to forget.
In this photo, the marabou stork shows itself in all its glory. Its outstretched wings reveal an impressive wingspan that can reach over three metres. This makes it one of the largest flying birds on the African continent. Despite its imposing appearance, the marabou is an excellent glider, capable of riding rising warm air currents for hours without a single wingbeat. The species plays an important role in the ecosystem. As a scavenger, the marabou clears away carcasses, thereby helping to limit the spread of disease. It also does not shy away from other food sources. Fish, small animals and even rubbish can feature on the menu. This versatility makes it a successful survivor in both nature reserves and in the vicinity of human settlements.
What makes this photo particularly special is the moment when the bird spreads its wings. The combination of its powerful build, detailed plumage and striking gaze emphasises the character of a bird that may not win any beauty contests, but commands all the more respect. A striking figure that shows that nature does not always have to be beautiful to be impressive.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
