The Chiesa di San Pietro (or Saint Peter's Church) at Porto Venere (Italy) is perched high on a rock in the sea. The church is best known for its unusual black and white facade and semicircular apse. The Gothic church was dedicated in 1198. However, on this spot there have been religious buildings dating back to ancient times. In the surrounding area you can still see some walls and the remains of a church from the 5th century. Even earlier, a Roman temple dedicated to Venus stood on this spot.
