About the artwork

There are those still-life photos that really need very little to be proud of. I once saw a beautiful documentary on Dutch television about a young man in his 20s who had just become a father and asked his mother how she had experienced the first years of parenthood as a young woman. A scene from NPO 2Doc that has always stayed with me, except unfortunately for the title of the documentary.

During my first Solo trip to Morocco, I stayed Martil, the coastal town of the city of Tétouan. January 2024 was surprisingly warm and yet I will honestly say that during my stay I did not always feel comfortable. You are alone and look completely different from the average Moroccan, which draws quite a bit of attention.

During an evening walk along the coast, I came across this scene. Almost an exact recreation of the beginning scene from the documentary on young parenthood. It reminded me of the insecurity a young father had about his daughter and immediately provided a dose of nuance I needed myself. There are more important things to worry about than a blonde boy who comes strolling across your beach for a while.

The chairs by the sea are a symbol of vulnerable dialogue. combined with the falling evening and the sauteed colour palette, di will always remain one of my favourite photos. because in vulnerability you sometimes find the most beautiful pearls.
