This black-and-white photograph shows The Hague's city hall, affectionately - and sometimes ironically - referred to by Hagenaars as the Ice Palace for decades. The striking building on the Spui forms a powerful statement of modern architecture and urban ambition. In this composition, light, interplay of lines and scale come together in an impressive cityscape in which the city hall dominates, but at the same time remains part of the daily life around it. The city hall was opened in 1995 and designed by American architect Richard Meier. His signature style, with lots of white, glass and clean geometric shapes, is unmistakable here. In black and white, the building gains an extra graphic power: the facades turn into rhythms of light and shadow, windows become patterns and the massive volumes take on an almost sculptural appearance. The nickname "Ice Palace" refers both to its bright, cool appearance and its aura of monumentality and distance. The vibrancy of the city contrasts subtly with the austere architecture. Cyclists, pedestrians and bare trees in the foreground place the building firmly in the here and now. They give scale to the immense complex and provide a human scale within this administrative heart of the city. The dramatic sky enhances the atmosphere and turns the image into more than a recording city photo: it becomes a snapshot full of character. As wall decoration, this picture is ideally suited for lovers of modern architecture, urban photography and The Hague as an administrative city. The image exudes power, order and tranquillity and suits both a sleek, modern interior and a business environment. A timeless black-and-white photograph that tells the story of a city where administration, architecture and daily life come together.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
