The Fjaðrárgljúfur is an almost two kilometre long and one hundred metre deep gorge cut by the Fjaðrá River. The river Fjaðrá finds its way through this gorge to the Atlantic Ocean. The gorge has steep walls and is mainly composed of Palagonite. The rock of the gorge is probably about two million years old. The gorge itself arose after the last ice age, about nine thousand years ago.
